These poems are witty and mysterious, ethereal but deeply rooted in the earth. Mike Perrow’s ear is finely attuned to the sounds inside a word, evoking the gentle hum of the rural South, as well as the lilt and swing of Harlem jazz. “Light obsessed,” he knows about Charlie Parker’s saxophone, the behavior of the brightest points in the night sky, and the dangerous appetites of numbers.

Mike Perrow’s highly-anticipated book of poems is rich in its evocations of landscape and skyscape. His meditative voice is inflected with southern accents that linger and resonate. Think of mica-infused dust rising from the footfalls of pilgrims before you as you ascend a path toward a temple, toward “white observatories/ clustered on a hill.” Perrow is a kind of secular hierophant, with a sense of humor and a gorgeous lyric ear that sharpens our listening, tuning us to the notes that are “all / the more worth blowing.”

—Forrest Gander
