In No Dimes for the Dancing Gypsies, Linda King masterfully orchestrates an intriguing & mesmerizing work of identity and survival. These are poems of inquiry, poems of resurrection, where “water has a memory” and language reveals “other dichotomies,” where the past and present merge, and language beautifully triumphs. —Marcia Arrieta

No Dimes for the Dancing Gypsies by Linda King is a smart, thought-provoking book by a truly gifted poet. In her exciting new collection she paints the fraught, ‘frayed symmetries / like faint music.’ These remarkable poems are windows into the glowing transparency of their language and the stunning clarity of their wisdom allow us to see the human heart stripped bare. Ghosts of language and interpretation haunt this poetry, placing pressure on reasoning and meaning until it morphs into the insistent conjectures that influence a new dynamism. Moving through a startling range of tone and formal shape, King’s poems move and dance in, ‘slow implosion(s) of reality’ keenly attuned to “the limits of language.” King’s work reminds that after ‘every broken story’, there is something: a gift, ‘one perfect page.’

—Geoffrey Gatza

In No Dimes for the Dancing Gypsies, I am intrigued by the language theory that Linda King so eloquently made into poetry. King explores the premise that we exist only within thought and language. She stretches theories of meaning into a vast spatial universe that changes only through human thought and experience. She tells us that “all language is learned in anxiety,” and that as we live we are “naming things/into existence.” King’s collection of poetry examines the metaphysical invention of human experience and experimental language—and she does a marvelous job of showing us that in her poems.

Something fundamental exists in the foundation of Linda King’s poetry: a generosity of language that propels giving toward dexterous understanding. No Dimes for the Dancing Gypsies uses pluralized form toward purposeful gathering of various moments, and within the explanation of these moments, King’s language will provoke and guide in paralleling functionality, where the reader can absorb and interpret this wonderful collection.
