Sensational Spectacular by Nate Pritts
As its exuberant title suggests, Sensational Spectacular is a book of double energies, hurling out voluble, self-sparking poems on one side while clocking the reader upside the head with the essential loneliness of the lyric (and the universe) on the other. —Joyelle McSweeney

The speaker of many of these poems is like the blogger for a small group of friends, the ingenuous comedian whose darker thoughts are disguised in whimsy, irony, & slapstick. He is unassuming, unflappable, pleased to be here, simultaneously grandiose & poking fun at it. These poems are full of hopes & dreams, but behind them is the knowledge that we usually repeat our errors. That’s our destiny. Our mission is to fight against it, to tilt at the windmills, knowing we will lose.

If poetry were a planet without atmosphere and gravity poor, Nate Pritts might be found trekking toward the jagged rim of a smoldering volcano, his space helmet gleaming in the sun. Not even the lead shoes of his humanity could prevent his attempt to leap across the crater in a single bound. Boing! Yet, Pritts knows that we more resemble lost astronauts than supermen.
