This book tells the story of Stephen Grover "Grovey" Cleves, a fictionalized version of Grover Cleveland, following his life from birth to his rise in politics. Born in 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey, he was the youngest of the Cleves children, raised in a household marked by hardship and his father’s stern religious views. From a young age, Grovey exhibited a rebellious, prankster spirit and a fascination with power and significance. After moving to Buffalo, New York, under the guidance of his uncle Lewis Allen, he built a career in law, eventually becoming a respected attorney and assistant district attorney.

Despite avoiding military service in the Civil War by paying for a substitute, Grovey continued to climb the social and political ladder. He gained a reputation for hard work, enjoying an active social life while struggling with personal demons, including alcoholism and a conflicted sense of duty. He served as Erie County Sheriff, where he oversaw executions, further grappling with questions of morality and justice.

His relentless ambition led him to become the mayor of Buffalo in 1881, where he fought corruption with an almost divine fervor. A year later, he ascended to the position of governor of New York, seemingly pulled toward greatness by fate and the spirits of those he had lost. The story presents Grovey’s journey as a man both burdened and propelled by his past, with a fire inside him that neither he nor anyone else could fully control.

Mickey Harmon
From an early age Mickey Harmon has traced and rearranged imagery to drive his quest to visually narrate our world. Mickey has worked with local writers and artists to adapt the history of Buffalo and Western New York to various print and web projects. It wasn't until recently, he opened up my own gallery and retail shop in Buffalo's arts district, Allentown, named the Pine Apple Company. Through collaborating with 5 other artists/owners in the gallery and a population of creatives in the area, projects have ranged in scope and scale. Color Me White is his first project with collaborator Kevin Thurston. This book will be one of his first to leave his realm of historical fiction and enter a nearly 100 page illustrated poetry book from the depths of a writer who has seen his fair share of love, lorn, loss, and horrible things men say.
